So welcome to selfies, this is a quick introduction on what I know about selfies.
So a selfie is when you take a picture of yourself, or a portrait is when you draw or paint yourself. Artists make portraits to challenge themselves and paint/ draw what they think they look like then take a selfie of themselves and see how well they did and maybe do it again either looking in a mirror or looking at the selfie you took. One of the questions was do you make self portraits, answers unfortunately no. I would like to start drawing but I have to admit I'm not very good at drawing. Selfie: A photo of yourself that you take, typically with a smartphone or webcam, and usually put on social media. Self-Portrait: A painting, etc, that you do of yourself. They are similar by the fact that the outcome of the painting or the photo is it is of their face but the difference is a selfie is taken on a smartphone and a self-portrait is painted or drawn.

So Vivian Maier was a photographer who was born on February 1 1926, in Bronx, new York and died on April 20 2009, oak park Illinois. She was a nanny for 40 years and wile she was looking after the children she would stay at the parents house in a spare room. When she took the children out to play with them she would often go into the streets and go to parks and take thousands of pictures. She had a rectangular camera that she could look down into so she didn't have to hold it up to her eyes, this allowed her to take pictures of people without them realizing.

These are some of my favorite photos taken by Vivian Maier, they have this undeniable vulnerable feeling about all of them.
Anyway I've picked 20 pictures with a theme and the title of the exhibition is 'growing old through Viviane Maier eyes'.

This is the exhibition :Growing old through Vivian Maier eye's.
The spiral starts with the youngest in the centre, a almost new born baby and ejects off to the top left and if you follow it round the people in the picture get older and older until it stops at the bottom left. WWW: I really like the theme and title that I came up with by myself. EBI: I re did it and made them straight and made the spiral more clear. |
These are the photos I have taken in response to Vivian Maiers reflection photos. I used the mirror instead of windows so that our pictures would have slight similarities like they are all black and white, but then like I said I took all my photos with the mirror inside to show a clear repeating theme. In some photos i took inspiration from Vivian a little bit more than others. For example the photo where I am sitting on the ground in the mirror and you can see the camera I'm taking the picture with but it is not up to my face but rather down below how Vivian would hold her camera to make it less obvious she was taking photos.
WWW: I understood the task and took over 40 photos and carefully picked out the best which took a lot of time and patience.
EBI: If i could go outside into the world like on a bus and take a picture f the mirror on a seat but there's a global pandemic going on so I'm not allowed to do that. But yes to improve I would have gone to more places and taken more interesting photos.

This video is about asking the public what is a self portrait and a selfie and the differences and similarities between them. How a self portrait has a lot of time and effort being put into it to make sure you capture the true essence of that person, where as a selfie is a more modern quick moving picture that is just about what is going on right now instead of representing you as a person.

This video is about how there is a lack of representation of the ethnic minorities art work and ways to educate people on their work. She goes into depth about a particular self portrait about Grace Lau showing of her culture and Hermani makes some really interesting points about Graces self portrait and of in between her culture and the stereotypes of her culture.

Week 1
Omar Victor and the art of historical selfie
Samuel J miller - Frederick Douglass- 1847/52
A: Who was Frederick Douglass?
Frederick Douglass was born in February 1818 into the slave trade and managed to escape. He then later became the prominent activist for the abolishment of slavery and is a key part of getting rid of the slave trade. He was also an auther and a public speaker. He died February 20th 1895
B: What is a Daguerreotype?
The dictionary definition is - A photograph taken by an early photographic process employing an iodine- sensitized silvered plate and mercury vapour. The reason to why all the pictures that are Daguerreotype of people are not smiling is because the exposure time is extremely long and you must be able to stay in the same position for a long amount of time otherwise the picture will turn out blurry. An bonus to this though makes the pictures look really smart and organized, but sometimes the people in the pictures have a very dull resting face and almost look a bit dead in their pictures.
C: Why might Douglass have wanted portraits to be made of himself?
Douglass would of wanted pictures to be made of himself because he was born into slavery and escaped and worked his way to the top and wants and should be remembered in history as a big part of the abolishment of slavery
3: Write your own words, what you find interesting about the way Frederick Douglass is represented in this image?
He has represented himself in a very upper class manor, with the fancy tie and tuxedo. The long blazer/ coat also implies he is very well respected. The plain background shows he is the main piece of this art and he shall not be forgotten

Omar Victor Diop - Frederick Douglass- (1818-1895) from the Diaspora series
A: Who is Omar Victor Diop?
Omar was born in 1980's in Dakar Senegal. His profession is photography and he lives and works in Dakar. His studio practice lies in the style of fine art portraiture and sometimes self portraiture. By September 2013 he had produced 70 percent of the commercial advertising market in Dakar.
B: What does the word 'Diaspora' mean?
The dictionary definition of Diaspora is -The dispersion or spread of any people from their original homeland.
C: Why might of Diop have wanted to create a self portrait disguised as Frederick Douglass?
Frederick Douglass was a very well respected man and we must keep remembering his history and the trauma him and millions of others went through and i think he is recreating the self portrait to bring back to life the portrait and how he escaped such an oppressive situation and i think Omar wants to make a more updated and modern version to show that there are still people being oppressed because of the color of their skin and their beliefs and we are still fighting to stop racism.
3: What details in this picture do you find interesting?
I find the background quite interesting and how it matches his tuxedo. Also the burst of yellow from the whistle is very strange, this is an on going theme with Omar his obsession with putting some sort of football theme thing into his self portraits. For example I've seen footballs or football boots and this time a whistle so i look forward finding out why he does this. His facial expression is also similar to Frederick Douglass with the no smile and just resting face. I think he done this on purpose to show another similarity with Douglass.
4: Why is the picture circular?
A camera is typically round so the flash will come out circular so maybe he just wanted the most important/ best lit bits in the photo. Also normally pictures are square or rectangular but when that's different it makes you question it and you start to question more things n the picture.

Week 2
On the left is Jose Tapiro y baro - A Moroccan Man 1913
On the right is Omar Victor Diop - A Moroccan Man (1913) from the diaspora series. I have chosen this recreation to talk about because i love the use of the floral background. In Jose Tapiro y Baro's self portrait, I really like the simple gold ridge of the background frame and his beautiful white/ cream simple robe which gives him such an empowering look. On the other hand with Omar Victor Diops recreation of this in the background its very colorful and filled with a pattern of different flowers with a dark green background popping through which goes hand is hand with the lighter green background popping through a pattern of flowers on his robe. There's a recurring theme with football. In this picture he's holding a football which is quite eye catching because its a burst of blue and white. I don't think Omar wanted to disguise himself as the Moroccan man but recreate the self portrait as a modern version of this very powerful portrait. The differences between the portrait and the photograph is that the self portrait is very clearly paint and it gives it a more smooth look where as the photo has been taken with a modern camera so the lines are very sharp and everything is quite clear. |
